- Your driving, and the person ahead of you uses their turn signal before switching lanes. You are shocked. You’ve never seen this before. No one uses turn signals. In fact, you aren’t even sure if they exist.
- You see some road kill on the road. You are unable to tell what animal it is. Is it a cat? A raccoon? A possum? Is it even an animal at all?
- You see a dead chicken on the street corner. You aren’t anywhere near any farms, where the witches leave them as sacrifices for the old gods. This is Miami Beach.
- The red light you’ve been stopped at still hasn’t changed, even after nearly ten minutes. You’ve been here for so long. You’ve forgotten your name. Still, the light remains unchanged.
- There’s a new Publix where they wasn’t any before. And another. And another. Everywhere is Publix. Publix is your home now. You live among the bread rolls.
- It’s been raining all week, every day, without stop. Sunshine state? You’ve forgotten what the sun looks like. Was there ever a sun? When will the rains end?
- A heatwave is moving through again. You’re sweating. You’re indoors. It’s 75 degrees. Still, you sweat. All their is is sweat. The heat never ends.
- The hobo on the street corner meets your gaze. You look back at him. You feel as if you know him, yet you’re absolutely sure you’ve never seen him before. He bears an uncanny resemblance to the man who tried to sell you flowers a few blocks back. He is in your car.
- While driving through Miami Beach, you see some Orthodox Jews walking by in full traditional garb. It is summer. You blink, and they vanish. You ask around, but there’s no synagogue in the area.
- You’re walking by a canal. There is something in the water. Is it a log? Is it an alligator? You are unsure. When you try to get a closer look, it is gone.
- The old Blockbuster has been replaced by a botanica. Every store in the center is a botanica. You are a botanica.
